Our teeth tend to get covered in a colourless and sticky bacteria, known as biofilm. If the biofilm remains. it can build up around the area between the teeth and the gums. The bacteria in biofilm may also break down enamel when it comes in contact with sugar, ultimately causing tooth decay. Luckily, today’s technology enables dentists to remove biofilm effectively and pain-free using a revolutionary new technology called Biofilm guided therapy.
What is biofilm guided therapy?
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is an innovative technology currently being offered by Smith and Van Lierop Dentistry. GBT allows our oral hygienists to transform the patient experience by exchanging out-dated methods for a revolutionary system. The result is pain-free and fear-free oral healthcare for all ages.
GBT is done during dental cleanings and uses AirFlow technology to remove all biofilm in the mouth.
The benefits of biofilm guided therapy
Increases your comfort
GBT is a highly effective and minimally invasive procedure. GBT decreases the use of power and hand instrumentation, making it minimally invasive on your teeth, gums and restorations. As a result, you experience minimum pain and added comfort while receiving treatment.
Maintains orthodontic appliances
Orthodontic appliances increase biofilm growth in areas not accessible by daily brushing and flossing. Biofilm also creates wire friction, gingivitis and caries. Biofilm technology removes biofilm in critical areas, safely and effectively.
Excellent stain removal
GBT is an excellent option for those who want to remove stains from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco consumption. You can also have biofilm therapy before receiving tooth whitening to achieve the best results.
Shorter treatment time
We know that you lead a busy life, so we want to reduce the time you spend on our offices. GBT reduces the time you spend in the hygienist chair from 20 to just 7 minutes!
Prevents gum disease and tooth decay
Biofilm is not always visible to the naked eye. Using biofilm colouring discloses hidden biofilm, making it easier to remove all biofilm. GBT prevents caries and gum disease in both children and adults. No biofilm = No gum disease or tooth decay.
Suitable for both natural teeth and restorations
Since GBT is so gentle, we can use it on natural teeth, restorations, orthodontic braces, implants, the gums and tongue.
How does Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) work?
Step1: We examine the mouth to identify any gum disease or dental decay. This allows us to assess your treatment needs and goals.
Step 2: We colour your teeth with a dye that makes the biofilm visible. We can then see any problem areas- this will help to personalise your oral hygiene routine. The colour will also guide the removal of biofilm.
Step 3: Depending on your needs, we may use a combination of up to three cleaning systems. We gently remove staining, biofilm, staining and light deposits.
Step 4: We do a final check to ensure there is no residual biofilm left. We also screen one last time for any decay. We then apply fluoride seal to protect teeth.
Why do I need biofilm guided therapy?
Dental biofilm is the main factor for caries, periodontal and peri-implant infections. Periodontitis can, in turn, increase the risk of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, arthritis or diabetes.
Regular oral hygiene, combined with measures such as Biofilm therapy, keeps biofilm under control for a better oral and overall health.
