How cosmetic dentistry improved a patient’s smile

Cosmetic dentistry uses a series of customised dental treatments and procedures to improve the appearance of your teeth and gums. At Smith and Van Lierop Dentistry, our goals are to give you the appearance of a gorgeous smile and ensure that your mouth is as healthy as it looks.

One of our patients came to us, hoping to update his “tired old smile”. Since we love creating natural, healthy smiles that boosts confidence, we jumped at the opportunity to help this patient.

In this blog, we’ll take a look at how we took this patient’s smile from drab to fab!

Digital smile design

Firstly, we designed a Digital Smile Design process. We use digital photography, videos and computer imaging software to create a 3D model of the patient’s ideal smile.

Treatment options vary, but will include one or more of our specialised cosmetic treatments. In our patient’s case, we specifically found that using E-max veneers, bonding, and dental implants would offer our patient the most balanced and beautiful smile.

Emax Veneers

Veneers are thin layers of tooth-coloured material bonded to the front surface of damaged or discoloured teeth to correct the problem. Emax porcelain veneers the most common types of veneers that we recommend for patients. In addition, they offer an incredible cosmetic appearance that gives your teeth the natural lustre and translucence of a healthy smile.

To prepare the patient’s teeth, we remove a small amount of enamel from the sides and front of the teeth. Next, we make an impression, or mould, of the prepared teeth, and we chose a veneer shade that best suits the patient’s smile. Secondly, we place the veneers onto the teeth and check the fit and shape. Finally, we clean the teeth and bond the veneers to the teeth.

Bonding

Composite bonding is a cosmetic procedure in which composite resin is shaped and moulded onto teeth to create the appearance of a whiter and straighter smile. We use bonding as a cosmetic solution for chipped teeth, gapped teeth and discolouration in both teeth and fillings.

The patient’s tooth is prepared by lightly etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, a plastic resin is shaded and sculpted into the desired shape. Finally, we trim, smooth and polish the resin for a natural appearance.

Dental implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that we place in your jawbone. Implants bond with the natural bone and become a sturdy base for supporting one or more artificial teeth (usually crowns).

We start the procedure with a thorough examination of the patient’s mouth. This includes taking Digital X-rays and 3D images. The planning phase helps us develop a plan for implant surgery.

At the next appointment, we use local anaesthesia to keep the patient comfortable, and then we place the implant into the jawbone where the patient’s tooth was missing.

The patient’s healing process takes a few months. After the gums heal, we take impressions of the mouth and remaining teeth to custom-make the artificial teeth. These teeth are individual crowns that we place onto the tooth roots.
