Teeth Whitening toothpaste can whiten teeth slightly by removing surface stains, usually caused by drinking coffee or smoking. Though, it can’t change the natural colour of your teeth or lighten a stain that goes deeper than a tooth’s surface. Unlike bleaching products, which contain carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, teeth whitening toothpaste only cleans the enamel rather than changing the colour of your teeth.
What’s in teeth whitening toothpaste?
To remove surface stains, whitening toothpaste typically includes:
- Special abrasives that gently polish the teeth
- Chemicals that help break down or dissolve stains
Some teeth whitening toothpaste contains the chemical “blue covarine”, which adheres to the surface of the teeth and creates an optical illusion that can make teeth appear less yellow.
How do teeth get stained?
Each of your teeth is made up of an inner dentin layer and a hard outer enamel layer, which protects the teeth. When you put stuff in your mouth such as food, cigarettes, coffee, etc., another layer gradually forms on top of the enamel layer. The foreign material accumulates to form a pellicle film over the enamel layer.
The problem is, as this pellicle layer sits on your teeth for years and years, the foreign material gets into the enamel. The enamel layer is made up of hydroxyapatite crystals, which form microscopic hexagonal “rods.” Simply put: enamel is porous so it can be easily stained when staining agents work their way down into the tooth.
Using a whitening toothpaste can remove some of the film on the tooth enamel. Unfortunately, it cannot remove all stains or change the natural colour of your teeth,
Some people can achieve the results they want with whitening toothpaste. This is because there are individual variations in tooth colour. Teeth that have a greyish tint are unlikely to respond well to bleaching, while brown teeth can sometimes respond, and yellowish teeth are most likely to become pearly white with bleaching.
Teeth whitening toothpaste does help to a certain extent, however, if you want the deeper stains removed or you which to change the colour of your teeth a professional teeth whitening must be done.
